General Studies Curriculum

Standard Ninth Grade Curriculum

English 9 – The English program is designed to improve writing proficiency and communication skills, and to stimulate critical and creative thinking.  Vocabulary development plays a major role in all English courses.  To improve writing skills, students are taught paragraph and theme organization, thesis and topic sentences, opening, development, and closing paragraphs.

In the study of literature, students are guided to explore themes and literary devices as they occur in the various forms and genres of literature.

Algebra II – This course is designed to introduce the fundamentals and basic principles of Algebra.  Students are taught properties of real numbers, to compute with algebraic expressions, polynomial algebraic fractions, interpreting word problems, graphing linear equations, and solving simple quadratic equations.

Biology I – This course is an overview of Biological principle, cellular biology and fundamentals of genetics.  Students acquire an understanding of scientific method and its application to modern experimentation.

Social Studies (Civics/Economics) – This course is designed to prepare students to be able to make informed and reasoned decisions.  The goal of this course is to develop the students to be effective citizens by appreciating freedom, demonstrating social responsibility, and engaging in responsible decision making.

This course explores economics and government (Federal and State) in conjunction with American society.
